Rothesay Visitors Centre


The Rothesay Visitors centre is a recommended first step for those exploring the town. This Grade-A listed building with its beautiful Art Nouveau steel-and-glass architecture is a sight to behold. Dating back to the 1920’s this former concert hall once faced demolition.  However, since 2001 it has been home to the Rothesay Visitors Centre providing tourist information for the island, together with interactive exhibits illustrating local attractions and historical insights into life on Bute. Within this picturesque building you will also find a Genealogy Centre and a 90-seater Discovery Theatre, which serves as Rothesay’s cinema.


Bute Museum


Step into the past and immerse yourself in the captivating history of the Isle of Bute at the Bute Museum. This charming museum is a treasure trove of stories, artifacts, and insights that paint a vivid picture of the island's rich heritage. The Museum houses a Lecture room and Library with a fine collection of books, documents, photographs and archival material relating to Bute.

Mount Stuart


The ancestral home of the Marquesses of Bute, Mount Stuart is often credited as one of the first places in Scotland to have electricity installed for domestic use. Mount Stuart which houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative objects offers guided tours of the house and gardens, allowing visitors to learn about the history of the house and the Bute family.  A must see when visiting the island, Mount Stuart stands as a masterpiece of architectural brilliance and natural beauty.


Rothesay Castle


The rich heritage and stunning waterfront location of this formidable fortress will delight history enthusiasts and curious travellers alike.  Nestled in the heart of Rothesay, the castle which dates back to 1200 is still protected by its moat. Captured by the Vikings in 1228 the castle frequently changed hands until the final defeat of the Vikings at the Battle of Largs. Today it is managed by Historic Scotland and is open to the public, accessed across a drawbridge.
